Abstract

The population of the river Loire has been studied from March 1977 to October 1978. It is composed essentially of rotifers and small forms of Cladocera (Bosmina) and Copepoda. The dominance of small species and ecotypes seems to be related to the short passage of the population in the river and probably to predation of the larger forms by planktophagous fish. Zooplankton composition and dynamics are influenced by temperature, biomass, phytoplankton composition and by the rate of water flow. The regular decrease of the flow in 1978 caused an increase in rotifer numbers by extending the passage time of their population in the Loire, and by promotion the occurrence of species which cannot develop in a fast flow (B. budapestinensis, T. pusilla).
