Abstract

Climatology's late emergence as a science is partly explained in terms of its traditional opposition to meteorology's special emphasis on weather forecasting. The sixties marked a turning point as a number of serious crises arising from climatic anomalies stirred the consciousness of scientists and general public. Thus a discipline of climatology rose whose explicit concern for the human implications of weather and climate focus on the notion of variability. In this perspective climate can be regarded as a natural resource, and climatic knowledge may be considered as an element of regional economic infrastructure. Geography well disposed to consider both aspects of climate faced a serious "bottleneck" situation in France with respect to research possibilities and general level of geographic education among general public.
