Abstract

Yellow-legged herring gulls prey on the Greater Flamingo breeding colony in the Camargue (southern France), taking both eggs and chicks. They kill young chicks in their nest and flightless young forming large aggregates ("crèches"). Flamingos are very vulnerable to predation but the size of the colony and the close synchronization of the breeding cycle may reduce its impact.
