Abstract

A Quaternary terrace sequence records the initial aggradation within the Kuiseb River and its major tributaries, subsequent to canyon incision. Palaeo-dunes are interbedded with fluvial sediments in the distal reach which implies the presence of dunes, at least along the southern bank of the lower incised section of the Kuiseb River during that phase of aggradation. The concurrence of similar terrace deposits in other larger rivers flowing across the Namib suggests that some regional control, possibly related to early Quaternary climatic, tectonic or eustatic changes, has had significant influence on the westward-flowing drainage systems in South West Africa.
