Abstract

This paper presents the essence of recent lithostratigraphical studies on a suite of over 250 boreholes drilled in largely unconsolidated Cenozoic sediments between Cape Town and Eland's Bay. Early Pliocene cold-water transgression laid down the Varswater Formation with its well-known vertebrate fossil assemblage and phosphorite sand. The formation is well developed at Elandsfontyn at elevations up to 89,4 m. The Pleistocene Bredasdorp Formation may be represented by three phases of dune-building, the oldest dunes being decalcified to silica sand. Evidence of minor marine transgressions of +12, +6 and +2 m is presented.
