Abstract

On the so called "broken-down" and "simplified" types of steep coasts of Baltic see mass movement will be evoked by inside and outside influences. As defined by mechanics it is possible to reduce these movements to "sliding", "flowing" and "tilting". The causes of such mass movements are based on the disturbance of temporary balance between soil properties, bedding conditions, intrusion of water, geometric conditions of slope and vegetation. The influence of the agents of denudation (seawater, surface water, subsoilwater, frost thawing action) differs for the two basic types of steep coast, i.e. steep coast of homogeneous of inhomogeneous structure. In the second case dislocations of beds are of special importance. It is possible to classify corrective measures at steep coasts like those applied to earth work in constructive measures, drainage measures and engineering-biological measures.
