Much recent research in agriculturally-related disciplines suggests that considerable changes in the distribution and techniques of agricultural production may derive from energy price rises and supply shorfalls. Some characteristics of agricultural production at global and national levels are discussed from an energy perspective. Farm level responses to adverse trends in energy markets may have far-reaching consequences for the distribution of production and the viability of particular rural economies.
