Abstract

This paper addresses Wallerstein's concept of the existence of a group of semiperipheral countries as a distinctive segment of the world-system economy. The first section of the paper considers flows of investment into and out of Australia. In the final two sections the implications of these flows within the Australian space economy are considered by reference to a case study of the pattern of investment of the largest foreign-owned group in the country and a study of the continuing polarization of firm headquarters into fewer and fewer locations.
