Abstract

Sardinian emigration started with the mining crisis in the late 1950s, spreading to farming areas in the 1960s, affecting the more stable pastoral economy only after about 1966. Working at the level of the commune, a number of hypothetical links between migration and nineteen related variables are analysed via the technique of stepwise multiple regression. The analysis covers the intercensal period 1961-71. It shows that job motivation is the principal reason affecting rates of outmigration. Official industrial policy has had some success in stemming the outflow, but only at the price of destabilizing the island's occupational structure.
