Abstract

In stratigraphical analysis polynomial trend surfaces may be used to approximate structural surfaces or intervals betwween these surfaces or other variables of interest. Using the derived algorithm it is possible to compute rapidly the exact volume under the trend surface, within any arbitrary closed polygonal boundary. This volume is of use in itself, or as a measure of goodness-of-fit of the trend surface.
