Abstract

The palynological subdivisions concerning the Plio-Pleistocene limit in Greece are as follow: Upper Pliocene, terminal Pliocene, Pre-Pleistocene (Pretiglian, Tiglian) Post Tiglian, Pleistocene. Since the international congress in London, the Pliocene-Quaternary limit has been disputed. Fixed at 1,8 Ma., it is situated in the middle of the Tiglian where it does not correspond to any change in the pollen flora. Numerous palynological analyses made in central and S Greece reveal a major but older break at the base of the Pretiglian. This rupture indicates a cold period marking the irreversible disappearance of warm floral Neogene elements. As in Italy, the Pretiglian of S Greece is associated with climate faunistic markers.
