Abstract

All samples from the upper horizons of hydro-morphic arable soils included a mixture of concretions differing in shape and colour. These concretions consist of newly formed manganese and iron oxides and, for the greater part (about 75% of the weight), for minerals originally contained in the soil substrat| in very sandy samples such as quartz and feldspat of the sandy fraction| in very clayey and silty samples for instance finest particles incorporated in the plasma. A great deal of the newly formed manganese and iron oxides were found to be deposited in the larger interstices of the soil and the concretionary form, respectively. As the iron-manganese concretions under study do not show a concentric shell structure, they are classified as nodules according to Brewer. The juxtaposition of zones of different new substances in one and the same concretion is to be attributed to the chronological order of their development in dependence on the dynamics of the redox potential.
