Abstract

The migration of wealthier classes into inner city neighborhoods is believed to be forcing the outmigration of poorer residents. Yet, empirical tests of this relationship have, to date, been few and limites. The examination of 967 census tracts in nine cities during the mid-and late 1970s shows a pattern of "cautious gentrification" that coexists whith neighborhood deterioration and that is not dependent upon net inmovement of professionals from the suburban ring.
