Abstract

Between 1974 and 1978, the time, intensity and frequency of floods of the river Elbe near Wittenberg were recorded and the effects on soil and grassland investigated. On the foreshore, sedimentation prevailed over erosion. The deposits were unevenly spread (between 4 to 20 and 30 to 50 ha) depending on the relief and the flow conditions. They were rich in humus and nutrients. Permanent grassland showed great tolerance of flooding. Reseeded grassland was strongly affected by excessive alluvial mud (2-3 cm). Flooding tolerance was high in Phalaris arundinacia, Alepecurus pratensis, Phlenum pratense, Proa pratensis| moderate in Festuca pratensis| and low in Lolium perenne.
