Abstract

Observations of the first deep dive on the European Atlantic continental margin are reported. The dive was carried out with the submersible "Cyana" down to a depth of 2650m on the Armorican margin. A sedimentary sequence of chalk and marl, presumably of Tertiary age, was surveyed, and several recently activated faults were encountered. These faults indicate the subsidence of the floor of the Biscay Abyssal Plain, probably due to the cooling of the underlying crust as well as to the accumulation of sediments.
