Abstract

Through daily experience, city dwellers develop mental pictures of their environment. Direct inquiries, mental maps and pictures comparisons were used to get basic information about behaviour of people, living in Mulhouse, France. Both principal components and correspondence analyses were applied to develop efficient ways to measure and define mental regularities. The obtained results are both diversified and consistent. They point out the roles of sex, age and some socioeconomic factors as determinants of the images. Traditional empirical analyses complete and refine understanding of the spatial dimensions of the images.
