L'espace nîmois: en marge ou en attente?

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

Its brilliant industrial past (XVIIth-XVIIIth centuries) has left the town of Nîmes with more handicaps than advantages. Traditionally a workers'town, Nîmes has lost much of its interest for the industrial managers who are now trying to find a basin of cheap and docile labour-force. In the agricultural region, reconverted thanks to the CNARBRL, the accumulation of capital is not important enough to generate a new industrial activity linked with agricultural production. This region is now partly controlled by multinational corporations (Libby's-Lenzbourg). Therefore, the Nîmes bourgeoisie, looking for new profits, turns to investments in tourism (Port-Camargue) and tries to protect its town from the influence of Montpellier, the regional capital. The problem is a political question: the future of Nîmes depends on the outcome of inside struggles but also of those in which local and central powers are involved.
