Holocene surface lowering in the Lias cuesta area of Luxembourg as calculated from the amount of volcanic minerals of Allerod age remaining in residual soils

A method is given for calculating the surface lowering of residual soils in Luxembourg from the amount of volcanic minerals surviving holocene erosion after their deposition at the end of the Pleistocene. The amount of lowering equals the depth of soil homogenisation multiplied by the natural logarithm of the ratio between the original and the present frequency of the volcanic minerals. With this method it is shown that the probable lowering of the Lias cuesta by holocene soil erosion ranges from 0 to 57cm the maximum lowering occuring on the steep lower part of the escarpment slope underlain by the fine-grained Keuper soils.
