Abstract

A Permian conglomerate of continental origin, the Malmédy Puddingstone, extends across the Cambrian massif of Stavelot. The conglomerate has three successive units, the middle one comprising predominantly limestone pebbles in a calcareous-argillaceous matrix. This unit functions as a limestone and features of solution, almost entirely ignored until now in this part of the Ardennes, are quite frequent especially in the neighbourhood of Bévercé-Malmédy. Dolines, stream sinks, shafts, dry valleys, caves and karst pinacles all occur. (LW).
