Abstract

This article deals with meteorological fluctuations, especially in Spring and Summer tenperatures in the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as these are revealed by the quantitative and serial history of the vine harvest dates. The major portion of the data collected by the authors comes from the vineyards of the northeast region of France's wine-growing area. Extremely high correlations are observed with the series of temperatures recorded by the Observatory of Paris, notably in the nineteenth century. This circumstance yields a very powerful tool for studying the history of climate. The authors are particularly interested in the differences between series of hot Summers and series of cold Summers, for example between the first and second halves of the sixteenth century the latter period marking the beginning or intensification of the famous minor ice age.
