Abstract

After defining karst geomorphology, the development of the discipline is traced through consideration of the various conceptual frameworks that have been applied, i.e. variation in assemblage as a result of stage in development, as a result of morpho-climatic difference and as a result of geological variation in structure and lithology. Very recently quantitative hypothesis testing techniques have been attempted. The state of karst research in South Africa is assessed with particular reference to the Proterozoic dolomitic limestone outcrop, where most research has been concentrated. The constraints affecting karst development are enumerated before the main characteristics of the landforms are briefly considered. (L'A.).
