Social geography and the study of the capitalist city: a review

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

This study is based upon the so-called behavioural approach. This approach is exemplified (with reference to the social patterning of cities and environmental satisfaction) and then criticised. Next the spatial and allocational constraints that affect people's activities in cities are discussed, the former dealing with the impact of relative location, and latter not only with allocation procedures and their outcomes (particularly in the field of housing) but also their contexts. Finally, the essentially political views on the nature of social change implicit in the preceding social geographical work are examined. (AGD).
