How is the importance of countries perceived in different parts of the world? What makes a country seem important? These questions have been examined by H. POHJANMIES-NURMI in her unpublished master's thesis at the Department of Geography, Helsinki University. In order to answer the first question she used as an indicator of importance the relative length of the textual descriptions of the world's countries in a Finnish, a French, a Russian and American encyclopedia. On the whole the four "world-views" were astonishingly similar. An answer to the second question was sought by comparing the length of the country descriptions to some characteristics of the countries. In all four cases the text length were weakly correlated with the areas, fairly well correlated with the population sizes and strongly correlated with the gross national products of the countries.
