La sécheresse 1976: aspects climatologiques

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

With the knowledge in mind that every drought is a result of a persistent upsetting of the water balance, an inventory of the available climatic data was made to determine the intensity of the 1976 drought. The analysis of this study brings out an unusual run of more or less deficient months ending up during the Summer, in an exceptional situation, mainly in the northwest of our country, where the rain shortages sometimes exceed 60% for the period December 1975-July 1976. The anomalies in rain volume united with strong evapotranspiration lead to abnormally high water shortages. It is pointed out that this climatic situation is linked up with great changes in the general circulation of the atmosphere over the nearby Atlantic and Europe. Having stressed that no workable means of evoking rain exist as yet, it is brought to notice that there is no proof that the 1976 drought shows a definite climatic tendency.
