Abstract

The settlement structure of a territory has a major influence upon production effeciency and the quality of living conditions. Their development sets out from conditions that have evolved in the course of history and calls for new measures to be defined according to the social and economic objectives of socialist society. Planning of settlement structure proceeds in stages, i. e. analysis of settlement substance, ascertainment of influencing factors, definition of trends in settlement structure development and the most suitable way of implementing them. In the Quedlinburg country-district there are, apart from the generally effective influence factors resulting from the development of production, the residential population and its needs, especially the recreation function, which is motivated by the natural conditions, and the preservations of historically valuable substance of great importance.
