Abstract

Early and Middle Pleistocene sands exposed near Hattem have been studied in thin-sections after artificial hardening. Two methods of study have been applied: a descriptive and an intuitive method. These methods are discussed and the results are given in table 2. In table 3 the results are compared with those of Zandstra (1971), who studied the same sediments in the field and in the laboratory with heavy mineral and gravel analysis. It is concluded that a thin-section analysis gives stratigraphic results comparable with a heavy mineral analysis and is a good substitute for gravel analysis if gravel is lacking. Also the merits and draw-backs of the intuitive method are discussed| the results of this method are very promising.
