Abstract

Distribution and ecology of H. armoricum are studied in the Ardennes massif. Known from 24 IFB-squares (16km) before 1930, it is recorded today from 59 IFB-squares: 38 from the Stavelot Cambro-Ordovician massif, 18 from the Rocroi massif and 3 isolated localities. This species is almost restricted to acid-oligotrophic streams running through the Revinian, Devillian, Salmian and sometimes Gedinnian: acid waters (pH 4-6.5), low mineralisation (0.51.5 meq/1), low Ca content (<10ppm), no or low alcalinity (<10ppm CaCO) and high SO content (10-25ppm). It is only known from one locality on Siegenian rocks and completely absent from Emsian regions. H. armoricum grows preferentially in woody shady places, on rocky or fine gravely banquettes along the streams as well as on rocks, wet places under overhanging banks and under small cascades.
