Abstract

A review of a research project on the arachnofauna of the litter layer, which was executed by use of pitfall traps, is given. At the Walenboscomplex (prov. Brabant, Belgium) a number of different ecotopes were sampled. A first species list of the arachnofauna of this area, caught by pitfall trap and by other means, is given. The phenology of selected species and some faunistical notes then follow. A comparison of the studied ecotopes is performed. Although the conclusions drawn here are only tentative, it may be concluded that the planting of canadian poplar in alder carr causes the species composition to change for a considerable percentage. Differences in the arachnofauna, caught at different woodland types, are discussed in the ligth of the differences in undergrowth and, thus, in the litter and humus layers present.
