Abstract

The study of beechwood sites in the Belgian Ardennes, permits to select different soil factors related to the forest productivity. From mull to dysmoder humus form, the production of wood diminishes from 7.4 to 4.4 m/ha/year. Among the soil factors, litter decomposition rate, C/N ratio, cation exchange capacity, exchange acidity, and exchangeable Al and Ca are fairly correlated to the production. However significant differences between sites appear only in the O and Ah horizons. The definition of the humus form can be made in the field, therefore being a particularity interesting index.
