Abstract

The different models of space proposed by ODUM (1969), their functions and their particular planning requirements can help the choice of the values to be considered for environmental impact assessments. Two main approaches are discussed: the biological/ecological one, based essentially on inventories and assessments of natural areas, gives only an incomplete response. The other one, called "environmental approach" involves a bigger number of values, with, beyond the biological values, the social values liable to be altered by the highway project.
