Abstract

In the Southern Andes (1855 S), the plio-quaternary volcanism presents a progressive change of character from the calk-alkaline association to the shoshonitic and finally to the alkaline one. The calk-alkaline association is more aciditic in Northern than in Southern Chile as the down-going slab sinks deeper in the North. It would be for the same reason that the shoshonitic association referred to the deeper intermediate seisms is undescribed in the South of the continent where the alkaline association abuts with the calk-alkaline one.
