Abstract

In attempts to account for the spatial variations in voting patterns, geographers assume that these are a reflection of the geographical representation of societal structure. In this paper the voting in two recent Swiss referenda on foreign migrant controls is examined using multiple regression techniques, and the results show that in general the voting maps are explained by the basic social economic and cultural cleavages in the Swiss population and by the local importance of the issue on which the referenda were held. These factors also explain the extent of abstention from woting.
