Abstract

The scale of buildings and open spaces in inner cities is not a central topic in geographical research. However on the basis of current arguments in Dutch planning memorandums on inner cities it is concluded, that behind the demand for visual amenity and aesthetical quality control various other arguments are hiding and each of them requires geographical research. The second part of the paper is devoted to Alexanders study in which he compares the expected effects of integrated comprehensive redevelopment against the dispersed rebuilding of buildings in Covent Garden (London). His conclusion that piecemeal redevelopment is to be preferred is queried looking at the real or estimated consequences of the Hoog Catharijne project (Utrecht).
