Abstract

This paper collates and examines the geographical distribution of more than 700 marks of submergence or emergence from the last two thousand years. No clear general trend is found. Submergence prevails on the coasts of the USA, of West Europe and in most of the coasts of the Arctic, Indian and Pacific Ocean. These differences are attributed to isostatic and tectonic phenomena. The main conclusion is that no coastal region of the world may a priori be considered wholly stable. The consequent lack of an absolute basis makes hazardous, at present, any precise determination of "eustatic" sea levels since 2000 B.P. Possible eustatic fluctuations seem not to have exceeded decimetric order.
