Abstract

The article refers to a part of a Norwegian research project under the international research program "The Caledonian Orogen", adopted by IUGS/UNCTAD in 1974. The particular research project in question is called the "Kaledon Hardanger-Ryfylke", the results of which are presented. The article gives a survey of the geological history of the Hardanger-Ryfylke area. The main features of the geological history seem to be the same for the entire fringe of the Calodenian mountain range. The different layers of naps indicate an enormous short-cutting of the earth's crust under the Caledonian orogenesis. At the same time, the Pre-Cambrium nap-zones and the underlying layers also indicate similar short-cuttings and nappings during earlier orogonesis. These findings seem to support theories based on plate-tectonics. (E. Jahn).
