Abstract

Should the Zuiderzee be further reclaimed? The Zuiderzeeworks, having reclaimed many hundreds of square miles of fertile soil from the sea still make a big impression outside the country. In the Netherlands itself there is a growing tendency to stop reclaiming further. Discussions are now being centralized around the latest project: the Markerwaardpolder. A number of authors discusses in this special issue the necessity c.q. urgency of reclamation. From an environmental viewpoint inpoldering is detremented. (AGD).
