Abstract

The author reviews the main proofs of a great mobility of the island: earthquakes and heaving of a 2000years aged shoreline, in the western part of Crete. The climatic frame was rather warm in the first part of the Quaternary, then became cold with eolian deposits during the Riss and the Würm. In the evolution of great Cretan fault scarps, the slope fans have a double meaning tectonic and climatic. They were formed down to the altitude of 500-600m in the Wurmian period and to 200-300m in the rissian. They mask very fresh fault scarps from the Riss-Wurm. The allmid fans are tissian or würmian. They were formed during the youth-stage of the fault scarps and have a cyclical meaning| they are locally faulted.
