Abstract

Aging of the population of Quebec is analysed with reference to the population of the North Eastern United States. A structure, different from the surrounding population is then identified for Quebec. Various types of evolution are also identified for the period extending from 1930-31 to 1970-71, showing that aging is a complex phenomenon| in some cases, advanced aging is being replaced by a decrease in the percentage of aged persons. The phenomenon is then studied on a county basis. An analysis of population aging according to the type of residence shows that rural non-farming population and small town population are more concerned with aging whereas rural farming population has the lowest percentage. Important variations are also observed between the main agglomerations, some of them being above the provincial mean.
