Abstract

The use of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides for the control of tropical diseases and the treatment of agricultural crops in Central Africa has increased tremendously in the last two decennia. This paper give details of the utilisation of insecticides for the years 1969-1972 and indicates that the greatest source of pollution is the run-off from treated cotton fields along the Ruzizi river. At this moment the amounts of residues of pesticides in the fish are below the allowable limits. Howewer the lake has no outlet, so the accumulation of pesticides means an increasing danger to the environment.
