Abstract

BRIEF HISTORICAL REVIEW OF CANALISATION, BEND-CUTTING AND BANK PROTECTION WORK IN THE RIVER ISERE ABOVE GRENOBLE AND AT ITS INTERSECTION WITH A CROSS-VALLEY AT VEREPPE AFTER THE CITY. A 1:100 SCALE MODEL OF THE 8 KM STRETCH OF RIVER THROUGH GRENOBLE AND A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF THE ISERE BETWEEN ITS CONFLUENCE WITH THE RIVER ARC AND THE SAINT GERVAIS SILL 80 KM DOWNSTREAM WERE USED FOR THE INVESTIGATION. IN ADDITION TO PROTECT THE RIVER DYKES, AND TO PROVIDE A MILD-RIVER CHANNEL, ACTUAL PLANS INCLUDE SUB-RIVER SILLS FOR STABILISING THE RIVER AND RELATED AQUIFERS. IF POSSIBLE, FLOODING AREAS WILL BE MAINTAINED IN THE VIEW TO ATTENUATE MAJOR FLOODS BEFORE THEY REACH GRENOBLE.
