Abstract

THE FECHT, ONE OF THE MAIN TRIBUTARIES OF THE RIVER ILL, IS A TORRENTIAL RIVER. AFTER DISASTROUS FLOODS (DAMAGE AMOUNTS OVER 3 MILLIONS FRENCH FRANCS IN 1965), A GENERAL RIVER TRAINING PROGRAM WAS DRAWN UP BASICALLY WITH A VIEW TO STABILISE THE LONGITUDINAL RIVER PROFILE AND RIVER BANKS BELOW MUNSTER. SATISFACTORY INTEGRATION INTO THE LANDSCAPE IN A FEW YEARS'TIME HAS BEEN ENSURED BY THE USE OF ROCKFILL TO CONSTRUCT THE RIVER SILLS AND CONSOLIDATE THE BANKS, AND MORE RECENTLY, TRANSPORTATION TO WILLOW CUTTINGS AT STRATEGIC POINTS.
