Abstract

GRAVEL EXTRACTION FROM THE BED OF THE RIVER VAR, DECREASING SEDIMENT LOAD AND A NATURAL TENDENCY OF THE RIVER TO INCREASE ITS DEPTH HAD APPARENTLY COMBINED IN CAUSING WATER LEVELS TO FALL IN THE RIVER AND ITS AQUIFER IN THE ALLUVIUM. WITH A VIEW TO COUNTERACTING THE FALLING WATER TABLE TREND WHICH HAD REACHED AN ALARMING STAGE IN 1967, THE DIRECTION DEPARTEMENTALE DE L'EQUIPEMENT AND THE DIRECTION GENERALE DE L'AGRICULTURE JOINTLY COMMISSIONED A STUDY OF A SCHEME TO INSTALL SILLS ON THE RIVER BED, TO HALT FURTHER DEPRESSION OF THE WATER TABLE OR TO RAISE THE GROUNDWATER LEVEL, WHILST ALLOWING GRAVEL EXTRACTION TO PROCEED UNDER APPROPRIATE CONTROL. INVESTIGATIONS TO DETERMINE POSSIBLE EFFECT OF THE SILLS ON THE WATER TABLE LEVEL ARE DESCRIBED.
