Abstract

DURING THE ICE AGE, SCANDINAVIA WAS SUBMERGED UNDER THICK ICE SHEETS. ONLY IN SUBSEQUENT WARMER CONDITIONS WAS COLONISATION POSSIBLE BY PLANTS, ANIMALS AND MAN. G. CLARK EXAMINES THE WAY IN WHICH PEOPLE EXPANDED INTO THE REGION AND APPROPRIATED ITS RESOURCES DURING A PERIOD OF RAPID ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE. IN THE PRESENT VOLUME THE STORY IS CARRIED DOWN TO THE TIME SOME FIVE THOUSAND YEARS AGO WHEN CONDITIONS WERE RIPE, MORE PARTICULARLY IN THE SOUTH BUT LOCALLY ALSO ELSEWHERE, FOR THE PRACTICE OF FARMING.
