Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop an index based on economic losses and costs resulting from major weather and climate extremes occuring each year in the United States. The index serves as a single national measure of how the climate, as defined by those conditions that cause major financial losses in the United States, has fluctuated and will continue to fluctuate over time. An index was developed afer assessing a wide variety of historical data on extremes, each with a duration of 48 years or more. Those weather and climate variables ultimately selected in developing the loss index also had to be available in future years to allow for a continuing assessment of future fluctuations
