Abstract

The first part is a critique of the principles upon which traditional narratives of Irish castles are based. The second one is a lengthy exploration of the relationship between castle architecture and two particular forms of identity. The aim of these reflections is to reposition the castle at the centre of thinking about self-identity in medieval and post-medieval society
