Abstract

This paper reconstructs the accretionary history of a relatively simple reef island, Makin, in northern Kiribati. The extent to which soil development is related to depositional chronology is examined. The AA. find no evidence to support the hypothesis that organic content, and hence soil fertility, is related to age of substrate and the time available for humus incorporation into the soil
