Abstract

Particular attention is paid to the writings of James Watt on the subject of patent law. Patents were the clearest example of allocating ownership of intangible varieties of property : manufacturers argued that their welfare and national prosperity was under threat from a failure to recognize the peculiar nature of modern commerce.
