Abstract

The AA. investigated the mineralogy and chemistry of 6 Red Soils from 2 intramontane basins (duns) within the Siwalik system in SW Nepal near the border with India. To distinguish recent and relict features in tropical regions, they also studied previously the mineralogy of 9 surface Red Soils formed on saprolite derived from Peninsular Gneiss in South India. These soils occur in a climatic sequence from 2500 mm annual rainfall (10 wet months) on the winward side of the Western Ghats to 590 mm a-1 on the leeward side. The soil moisture regimes for these stations were computed using the Newhall simulation model (Van Wambeke, 1985). Discussion of the results
