Abstract

Winner of the Harry and Shirley Bailey Award for outstanding paper be a Ph.D. student at the 1998 annual meeting in Flagstaff, Arizona. Paper focuses on the implementation of and challenges to recent US border patrol policies (Operation Gatekeeper) in southern San Diego County, California. The border patrol is portrayed as trying to maintain a sense of identity and place comfortable for middle class Americans. At the same time, advocacy groups try to reconceptualize the border and even redefine citizenship. A. views border more as space of interaction than as a fixed line of demarcation. - (SLD)
