Abstract

The aim of this paper is to review the Glew and Ford (1980) model of the mode and rate of solution flute evolution; to consider field evidence of the rate of flute evolution in different materials; to consider field evidence of the morphological development of solution flutes. The occurrence of dated fluted surfaces in the field presents opportunities to test this model. The time to formation of flutes is confirmed as limestone (1000 years) > gypsum (100 years) > salt (10 years), and is consistent with the solubility of the main rock-forming minerals
